Dealing With Silverfish in Texas

Silverfish, which are sometimes called fishmoths, are tiny insects that are common throughout the world. In Texas, they are one of the more prominent pest species. They prefer to live in moist areas with a relative humidity of 75 to 95 percent, and they often make their homes in bathrooms, attics and basements. In drier climates, they tend to invade homes as a matter of survival to find a moist living space.

Finding silverfish in a home is a definite cause for concern. Although the small pests do not transmit any known diseases to humans, they eat a diet of anything that includes polysaccharides, which includes dextrin and starches. In Texas homes, this means that silverfish seek out items such as clothing, carpets, rugs, photos, papers, plaster, books, adhesives tapestries, and certain foodstuffs, including coffee and sugar. Accordingly, these pests have the potential to cause considerable damage to personal property.

One of the aspects of silverfish that make them such a troublesome issue is their reproductive cycle and long lifespan. A single silverfish can lay about 60 eggs at one time, and they tend to live between two and eight years. Additionally, silverfish can survive for about a year without eating, which makes them a robust pest with a high level of survivability. This means that an unaddressed silverfish infestation has the potential to become an enormous personal hassle, costing an exceptional amount of time, money and resources.

While certain preventative measures, such as cleaning out closets, regular vacuuming and airtight food storage, can prove effective at limiting exposure or mitigating damage, the appearance of silverfish makes contacting a pest control service necessary. In the state of Texas, where the climate outside is dry, silverfish are a common pest in homes. Despite personal measures that might help prevent silverfish, only professional pest technicians can ensure the safe elimination of a silverfish infestation in Texas.
