Termite Control: Year-Round Prevention Techniques

No matter where you live, termites can be hiding in your own home. Typically, these pests enjoy warmer temperatures, but they do sometimes attack your home during the winter to find warmth. An infestation of these tiny creatures is something no one or house should ever endure. To avoid this fate, check out these year-round prevention techniques for termite control.

Eliminate Water Exposure

While wood may be termites’ desired choice, just like all other living things, they need water to survive. They prefer areas where they have easy and quick access to wood and water. Areas with puddles are prime locations for them. It does not take a lot of water to keep these unwanted guests around. That is why you need to have gutters and downspouts that release water far enough from your home.

Store Wood Away From Your Home

Wood is termites’ go-to location to sleep, eat and breed. Therefore, the more wood you have around your home, the more chances of these bugs infesting your home. If you do have wood around your property, make sure to store these items at least 20 feet away from your home. If you need firewood during the colder months, place the pieces under a covered area, preferably a shed or workshop.

Repair Leaks

As mentioned above, termites need water to survive. An easy way for these pests to survive and thrive is to have access to a leak in or near your home. Broken or leaky pipes, drains and A/C units are ideal spots for termites to live. Any time you see any leaks or busted pipes, turn off your water and alleviate the issue immediately. The sooner you fix the problem, the fewer chances of you having termites invade your home.

Keep Your Exterior Clean

Cleaning the exterior of your house is a must even if you do not have pests, but it is even more important if you have a history of termites or have many infestations in your area. Clogged gutters or downspouts attract these creatures because of the accumulated debris, leaves and standing water. Make sure to keep these areas as clear as possible. If you do not want termites to have entry points into your home, fill in any outside cracks, gaps or crevices.
